Celebrating 25 years with the Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia

Published on 02nd September 2025

Mortgage Navigators have been serving the local communities of Sydney’s inner west for over 25 years. A key part of that journey, from the early days has been our membership of the Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia (MFAA). In an industry where so many things change over the years, the one thing which consistently helps our team deliver the right loan for the right home has been our involvement with the MFAA.

The MFAA is the peak national body representing professional mortgage and finance brokers, mortgage managers, and aggregators across Australia. They are the cornerstone for our industry, standing up for our profession and helping us create the best outcomes for our customers.

When we first started Mortgage Navigators in 1999, the mortgage broker industry was much different than it was today. The Australian mortgage broking industry was a relatively new but growing sector, emerging from financial deregulation in the 1980s. New non-bank lenders started to emerge which brought with it significant mortgage product innovation.

Aspiring homeowners were presented with more options for their home loans. Not just more lenders, but more products. It was becoming difficult to identify what the right loan looked like for your home. Hearing the same challenges over and over, seasoned professionals like our founder George saw the growing need for his expertise to help customers navigate this new landscape.

Not only was Mortgage Navigators born, but with a growing pool of finance experts looking to create better outcomes for customers, something was needed to bring these professionals together.

Founded as the Mortgage Bankers Association of Australia in 1980 and later the Mortgage Industry Association, the peak association stepped into the void, adapting its structure to better represent this flourishing sector. In this move the original MFAA established a framework of professionalism through education, accreditation, and a stringent code of conduct which continues to this day.

The MFAA had an initial focus on building the credibility that is the foundation of the industry’s success today. Brokers were starting to be recognised as the qualified financial professionals they are.

As members since 2000, we have witnessed first-hand how their guidance and leadership have elevated our profession in a number of different ways. When we began, the industry was far from standardised. The association’s tireless work in professional development, research and advocacy have shaped the mortgage broker industry into the robust and respected sector it is today.

Professional Development

Throughout the years, the MFAA has led with an unwavering commitment to education and professional development. With a keen understanding that the financial world is constantly changing, the MFAA has consistently provided its members with access to cutting-edge training, compliance resources, and industry insights.

Our industry moves fast. If you don’t keep up, you’ll be left behind. That’s why the MFAA’s ongoing professional development requirements are so important to keeping our team sharp.

The establishment of robust professional development programs, certifications, and ongoing educational requirements has ensured not just our team but all MFAA-accredited brokers are operating at the forefront of industry best practices.

And we succeed because the approach is balanced. The body offers formal accreditation from globally recognised institutions such as RMIT, but combines that with industry events and practical training. This keeps us connected to progressive ideas, supported by theories tested in the real world.

This commitment extends beyond basic compliance. It fosters a culture of continuous learning, enabling our team to confidently advise our clients on increasingly complex financial products and scenarios.

The MFAA’s role in fostering industry collaboration and unity has been integral in tackling challenges over the decades. It has successfully brought together diverse stakeholders to work towards common goals. This collaborative approach has been crucial in addressing industry-wide challenges over the years, from market fluctuations to technological disruptions.

The MFAA’s annual national conference and state-based events are prime examples of how we stay connected and stay ahead, bringing together industry leaders, experts, and those practicing on the front line to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and celebrate successes. These events are more than networking opportunities, they are vital forums for the collective growth of our profession.

Even after 26 years helping our customers build wealth through property, there is always more to learn. The MFAA helps us achieve that.

Research

Everything we do at Mortgage Navigators is about helping our customers make better informed decisions. To understand the property landscape, the opportunities in front of them and how to pursue the right assets to build real wealth.

This is fueled by valuable insights generated by the MFAA. Their reports, surveys, and whitepapers help our team stay informed about market trends, regulatory changes, consumer behaviours, and emerging opportunities. With detailed visibility over what’s coming, we can make sure our clients are prepared to take advantage or protect what they’ve built.

Research like the MFAA’s Industry Intelligence Service (IIS) report gives our team accurate, timely, and reliable market intelligence on mortgage broking trends. This regular snapshot of industry performance and demographic data allows us to set realistic goals for our clients and get better outcomes with improved operational efficiency.

With a national footprint and unparalleled access to the data which drives our industry, every member of Mortgage Navigators can be confident the right home gets the right loan, every time.

Advocacy

As the mortgage broker industry itself arose from a change in federal policy, it makes sense that the body representing our industry continues to fight for better policy outcomes at both a state and federal level.

In the decades we have been a member, the MFAA has navigated a number of complex issues on behalf of us and our customers. We can thank their efforts for better government support schemes for home buyers, helping more Australians secure their financial futures. Their advocacy helped implement changes to improve mortgage discharge processes, ensuring better and quicker settlements. By encouraging the embrace of Open Banking, we now have secure, instant access to a borrower’s financial data, which speeds up loan applications, improves accuracy, and allows us to give more personalised advice for finding the right loan for your home.

These causes may not get the publicity in the mainstream media, but without the advocacy support of the MFAA it would be much harder today for our customers to access one of the most proven vehicles for wealth creation in this country.

Their advocacy is not just about protecting the interests of its members, it ensures our clients continue to have access to diverse and competitive lending options, a cornerstone of a healthy financial market.

The MFAA’s deep understanding of both our industry needs and regulatory imperatives allowed for the successful implementation of reforms which strengthened the industry rather than stifling it.

As the industry evolves and the needs of borrowers change, the MFAA has long proven it is ready to support our professionals in making a stronger and more sustainable industry for the future.

It has championed the integration of digital tools and platforms that enhance broker efficiency and client experience, while also ensuring that technology is used ethically and securely. Moreover, in an era of increased scrutiny on financial services, the MFAA has reinforced its commitment to consumer advocacy, ensuring that brokers uphold their best interests duty and provide advice that is truly aligned with client needs. This steadfast dedication to consumer protection further solidifies the MFAA’s position as a responsible and forward-thinking industry body.

We know the value of the MFAA because we have grown alongside it. They have been in the trenches with us over the last 26 years and shown they will always do what it takes to ensure our customers have the best chance of building generational wealth through property.

It is why we were so honoured to be awarded Residential Finance Broker Award winner for NSW/ACT at the 2025 MFAA NSW/ACT State Excellence Awards. We know the commitment to excellence the MFAA have upheld for all of our 26 years in business so are humbled to be identified among one of their best.

We hold the organisation, their leadership and network of dedicated professionals in the highest esteem. We will continue to support this outstanding association and their tireless work for us and our customers for years to come.
